Joint municipality of Elbmarsch sets store by fiber-optic infrastructure components from euromicron’s subsidiary SKM Skyline to enable comprehensive digitization
Cities and municipalities that want to implement high-speed Internet under their own direction require competent technology partners. euromicron, a medium-sized high-tech group, plans, implements and operates digital infrastructures. As an expert for fiber-optic infrastructures, it has many years of experience in broadband expansion and has already supported many municipalities in achieving high-speed data transmission. The group’s expertise is currently being called on southeast of Hamburg: To create the FTTH (fiber to the home) network for the joint municipality of Elbmarsch in Lower Saxony, euromicron’s subsidiary SKM Skyline provided infrastructure components that ensure unrestricted network functionality even when there are high water levels on the River Elbe. The bandwidth also meets the very highest demands: 200 or 400 Mbit/s is already available – and the medium-term goal is 1,000 Mbit/s. The project will be completed in mid-2017, but is now already so successful that several neighboring communities are aiming to launch follow-up projects and move to a digital future under the roof of the Elbmarsch network company ElbKom.
Specifically, SKM Skyline is supporting creation of the fiber-optic infrastructure with highly water-proof fiber-optic cables, pre-assembled and pressure-sealed fiber-optic splice closures, and cable distribution boxes with multifunctional cabinets. These powerful components ensure that in particular highly critical points in the network, such as the joints between two fiber-optic links, are protected ideally even in the event of floods. Not least thanks to this high degree of resistance, the German Federal Technology Center for Electrical Engineering and Information Technology has certified that the Elbmarsch network is of the very highest quality. This new and powerful infrastructure will enable innovative broadband and other services for inhabitants and the regional business community in the future.
The Elbmarsch network company ElbKom is also highly satisfied: “One of our models was municipal broadband expansion in the community of Eichenzell in Eastern Hesse, which had likewise been supported by companies from the euromicron Group, including SKM Skyline,” states ElbKom’s Chief Executive Officer Uwe Luhmann. “Our decision in favor of SKM has absolutely paid off, as well: The fiber-optic network works smoothly and there hasn’t been a hint of problems so far.”
Wilhelm Bergmann, holder of general commercial power of attorney at SKM, sees the positive response as confirmation for the company: “Especially in structurally weak regions, the major providers are often not willing nowadays to invest in broadband expansion and the basic infrastructure needed for that. Municipalities that don’t want to be without leading-edge technologies such as the Internet of Things and so aim to take digitization into their own hands require competent support from experienced providers. As an expert in fiber-optic infrastructures, we – often in cooperation with our sister companies from the euromicron Group – deliver tailor-made solutions that enable municipalities to achieve their visions exactly."
